Since 2003, Cubic has been the sole provider of a proof-of-payment fare collection system at Edmonton Transit System, in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Edmonton Transit has 74 LRT vehicles and 13 LRT stations.
The system was initially equipped with 52 Ticket Vending Machines in the LRT stations. An additional 5 TVMs have been added since the initial contract.

Cubic has also provided ETS with a complete disaster recovery system. The Cubic central system, Nextfare, provides the fare collection backend for the whole system. The proof-of-payment system is smart card-ready and Edmonton Transit is anticipating the move to smart cards in the near future.
Edmonton Transit is also considering installing coin tubes on their fleet of over 900 buses. Coin tubes will accept Canadian coins, will validate the fare amount, and can be used in conjunction with the upcoming smart card system. Coin tubes provide an affordable alternative to traditional full-featured fare boxes.
